We caught Sandra right after her lesson — still in the ring, Lazura by her side — and asked her to tell us what just happened out there.

No filter. No time to overthink it. Just a rider in the middle of a moment, sharing what it actually feels like when something clicks between you and your horse.

If you've ever had one of those rides where you got off and thought something is different — this one's for you.

Hi, so we just finished up a lesson with Lazura and Sandra, and it is spring here at the farm, and we are now getting into sort of frozen mud season where it's muddy when the sun comes out, um, but then it freezes overnight and in the morning, so it's kind of stabby, you know, footing where the horses can't really walk a lot. So we're finding that the horses are pretty stiff when they come into the lessons because uh outside the footing is not amazing as we get through the spring season. So Lazura was working on uh loosening up her body and figuring things out, and then we were starting to prolong the um times that she goes between the rewards, and so she you could see she kept thinking, like, when is my treat happening? I'm still doing the things, but as you progress with the reward-integrated training um system, you do have to start prolonging between the rewards, although um Lazura doesn't necessarily agree with that. Um and so you could see her sort of thinking, like, I'm sure I'm doing the right thing, but you don't seem to be clicking and treating me, so I'm not sure what's happening, but they need to build up the strength once they understand the pattern of movement, and then they have to build up the cardio and the coordination. So um, how did that feel, Sandra? What is your feedback on the ride today?

SPEAKER_00

I thought our ride today was amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Yay!

We've been communicating very well. We felt very in sync. Um there were a couple of times where had I been riding all by myself, maybe I would have gone for the cancer because we were so in sync. So I really loved that she needed to be painted, I needed to be painted, and not automatically. So this idea of making her go for a longer to learn a new thing. To me, in my mind, it feels like her brain is expanding, my brain is expanding at the same time about the same thing. We're learning together, which is part of what I think makes the right system so fantastic.

It really clears up the communication, though, is what I feel like it does. It's like the horse really understands, okay, well, and their brain is engaged in the doing of the things, in the actual conversations versus um, you know, kind of checking out and going, oh gosh, this again. To me, it's um more interesting. And they have to, um, like I mean, like you just said too, they have to learn to carry things longer, right? Because once we create the pattern, then we strengthen the pattern. She's got the pattern, you've got the pattern way of going. And so now we have to strengthen that pattern a little bit more, and we do that progressively, obviously. Um okay, let me give you a treat because you're gonna do you need a little mint, and here she is having a little treat. That was so good, that was awesome today. Good girl.
